Abstract

ASSESSMENT OF THE WORD KOR AND ITS DERIVED FORMS IN DÎVÂNÜ LUGÂTİ'T-TÜRK
In Divânu Lûgati't-Türk, there are two separate words, ?or "lost" and ?or "yogurt or kumiss yeast". In the same work the words ?orlu? “leather cup to put kumiss in it”; ?orlan- I “to feel sorry for (the property that one has lost) and to yearn for it”; ?orlan- II “fermenting of cumin with yeast; solidification of fermented yogurt” are derivatives of these roots. The usages of these two different root words, which are close to each other in meaning, in the historical texts of the Turkish language have been determined. In this way, the place where the word ?or was first located and its first witnessed meaning were determined. According to the information obtained, the first place where the word kor II “maya” was seen is Maytrısimit, which is thought to belong to the 9th century. The word kor I "damage, loss" is found in Altun Yaruk, which belongs to the 10th century at the earliest. The meaning of the word ?orag “loss; mourning” reported in the Ongi Inscription does not seem to be far from the root ?or "damage, loss". The Ongi inscription, dated to the 8th century, in which the word korag was identified, predates both sources. Accordingly, when it is accepted that the word korag derives from the root of kor, which means "loss, damage"; the means of kor “yoghurt or kumiss yeast” and korlan- “fermenting of cumin with yeast; solidification of fermented yogurt”; are possible to assume that the derived form of occurred later.
