Abstract

AN INVESTIGATION ON AHMET MUHİP DIRANAS' POEM OF AĞRI
Ahmet Muhip Dıranas (1909-1980) has an important place in the Turkish literature of Republican period with his poems in which he successfully deals with different themes. Dıranas, who is remembered with his poems such as Fahriye Abla and Olvido, and especially with the poem Ağrı, while establishing a solid structure in this poem of 178 verses, he engages in serious inquiries into existence based on the elements of nature, especially the mountain motif. The mountain of Ağrı, which creates feelings of sublimity and divinity with its proximity to the sky and its gigantic form, turns into a symbolic expression of man’s effort to make sense of his own existence and desire for eternity. In this context, while leaving the classical mountain theme in the poem, the human meaning world of man is given with rich descriptions, accompanied by images built on contrast. External elements related to nature are used to describe the inner nature of man. Dıranas, who makes Baudelaire translations and is a Baudelaire admirer, incorporates the themes of pessimism and pain that he prioritized in his poetry, into his own poetry aesthetics. By attributing connotations to the dictionary meaning of the word pain, it highlights the tragedy of the human being, who is expelled from heaven and therefore forced into a worldly life woven with pain and suffering. He also places elements of fire, which is one of the main archetypes of the earth, in his poetry to feed the themes of pain and sin. This study aims to analyze Ahmet Muhip Dıranas’ poem with the sub-headings of 'Mountain and Other Elements of Nature Opening to the World of Human Meaning', 'Baudelaire's Effect on Pain in Dıranas' and 'Fire as a Fetish Object'.
