Abstract

ON THE ETYMOLOGY OF OLD UIGUR YAPA ‘COMPLETELY’
The lexicalization is a way of word formation in Turkish. This process is considered as “adoption into the lexicon’’ and ‘‘falling outside the productive rules of grammar”. Lexicalized words differ from words with productive suffixes, so lexicalized words have petrified or frozen suffixes. The frozen suffixes are very important on account of etymological explanations. Uigur yapa is derived from yap- ‘to cover (all); to stick (all) together’ by frozen vowel converb suffix -A. Old Turkic yapa must be inserted to forthcoming Old Turkic dictionaries.
