Abstract


MEHMET AKİF ERSOY 'S APPROACH TO THE CONCEPT OF “DEATH” İN “MEZARLIK” POETRY
Death is one of an unalterable fact in life that affects the people remain behind deeply.Being as old as human history, death has been examined profondly by all religional and philosophical thought systems. The reflection of death differs from society to society. This difference also reflects on those societies art. Death handled in Turkish culture largely and has enabled various types of literature in tow. For centuries poets using these literatute types, have interpreted this human reality in every aspect. Great Turkish culture that accepts Islam as a devotion, considering death as a begining not an end. By the 19th century under the effect of romanticism movement, death turned out to be a concept that questioned itself. Tanzimat Era artists such as Akif Pasha, Abdulhak Hamit Tarhan, Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem handled death from the viewpoint of metaphysic. This query of death was shown itself in Servet-i Fünun artists such as Tevfik Fikret, Cenap Şahabettin and in Fecr-i Ati artists such as Ahmet Haşim. In this piece of work we will examine the freelancer artist Mehmet Akif Ersoy’s perspective to the death through the one of his his poems named “Mezarlık”(Graveyard).
