Abstract

INDIVIDUAL and SOCIETY IN THE FIRST TWO SHORT STORY BY ORHAN DURU
Though Orhan Duru’s history of writing is mainly based on short story genre between the years 1953 and 2008, he is known for other kinds of engagement as well. Being interested in literary genres such as poetry and drama, Duru maintained a connection with media until the end of his life. He was also a translator. This study seeks to deal with Duru’s short story writing. However, his works will be categorized as he has many short stories. Hence, this study covers only the stories in his first two books. The first of these is Bırakılmış Biri published in 1959. The latter is Denge Uzmanı published in 1962. In these stories, Duru always fictionalizes heroes with a problematic perspective towards the world and the life itself. Similarly, these people’s attention towards their own existence and society is problematic as well. Via these characters, this study intends to deal with Orhan Duru’s approach towards human being. As this reminds the concept of society, the next step of the study is Duru’s perception of society. This study scrutinizes existentialism as reflected in the stories because Duru’s perception of humans and society seems to rely on existentialism.
