Abstract
THE MEANING AND FUNCTIONALITY OF IRON IN TURKISH PROVERBS
Word is the most fundamental cultural dynamic with all its qualities. One of the most important oral cultural products which are culture conveyers of societies is proverbs. Proverbs are products which reflect cultural, sociological, psychological, etc. every aspect of societies. In fact, iron, which has an important place in Turks’ cultural memory and world perception, has a wide coverage in Turkish proverbs as well. Hence, the number of proverbs related with iron is quite high. In this article, considering some proverbs related with different meanings of iron, the functionality of iron is emphasized in the context of social, cultural, and psychological structure of Turkish society. Moreover, how iron reflects Turkish society’s system of values is tried to be revealed in the socio-cultural context.
