Abstract
ON THE CLASSIFICATION OF WORD GROUPS IN TURKISH AND AZERI TURKISH
This study aims to examine Turkish and Azeri Turkish word groups based on a comparison of similarities and differences. According to the generally accepted view toward Turkish, word groups are classified as noun phrases, adjective clauses, verbal adjectives, gerunds, gerundiums, reiteratives, prepositions, conjunctions, proper nouns, compound nouns, interjectives, numerical nouns, compound verbs and abbreviations. The term used in Azeri Turkish for word groups is word compounding. Word compounding is further divided into open compounding (independent) and closed compounding (idioms). While the former is associated with lexicology, the latter is bound by syntax. Closed compounding includes idioms, sayings, expressions, proverbs etc., whereas open compounding is divided into compound nouns, compound verb and compound adverbs. These three open compounding categories are represented further by several sub-categories. In the study, word group classifications in both languages have been examined and information on classification criteria has been presented. Shared and distinctive aspects of Turkish and Azeri Turkish word groups have been specified. Differences in terms of classification in the two members of the Oghuz languages, very similar to one another, have been emphasised. The study contributes to the field by offering a detailed comparative analysis of word groups in the two languages concerned, revealing the similarities and differences between them explicitly.
