Abstract
SOME FINDINGS ABOUT TURKISH NAMING TRADITIONS
People have started to give names to each other in order to communicate more easily and provide the identity to people more easily since the first time they started to live together. These names result from many sources such as the physical characteristics of the person, the characteristics of the family, the child's birth time, beliefs, their expectations from the child in the future. People have given names to the livings and other objects they have seen in their environment. Although the first name-making styles are thought to be similar to each other in human history, people’s name-making traditions also changed from society to society in the following periods when cultures of these societies began to differentiate.
In this study, folkloric evaluations about how and by whom new babies and children are given names in the historical course of only Turkish culture without comparison with other cultures are examined in the context of the purposes of these names. Written sources and field research were used in the study. Based on the historical sources and the name-making styles we see today, the culture of naming children in the Turks has been tried to be determined.
