Abstract

FORMULAIC EXPRESSIONS IN MODERN TURKISH, NECESSITY OF A FORMULAIC EXPRESSIONS DICTIONARY AND HOW TO MAKE SUCH A DICTIONARY
Lexicon of a language consists of individual words and formulaic language units (proverbs, idioms, reduplications, compounds and formulaic expressions). Words form the largest part of the vocabulary and they are the most known and easily recognizedunits of the lexicon. Many Turkish dictionaries, general of speciallized, provide information about spelling, pronunciation, etymology and meaning of words and their usage. Beside dictionaries about words,it is necessary to compile formulaic units in the lexicon of a specific language, to explain their meanings and functions, to exemplify their usage for native speakers and foreigners who learn that language. In order to fulfill that necessity, Turkish general dictionaries include set phrases and special dictionaries provide list of multiword expressions with their meanings. It is easy to find many works about words, proverbs, idioms, compounds and reduplications in Turkish. However, formulaic expressions have not been paid attention they deserve as a unit of the lexicon. In an attempt to fill this gap, Turkish formulaic expressions should be compiled, explained and exemplified for language users. This paper, will deal with the compilation, explanation and exemplificaion of formulaic expressions in Turkish. It will attempt to show how to use these three types of research results in the preparation of a Turkish formulaic expressions dictionary. It is expected that such a dictionary will contribute to the clarification of formulaic expressions in Turkish lexicon.
