Abstract
TEMPORAL DIFFERENCES IN A. S. PUSHKIN'S POEMS TRANSLATED BY A. BEHRAMOĞLU INTO TURKISH: CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
The purpose of this research is to figure out how Ataol Behramoglu overcame narrowing and expansion of meanings in target language originating from temporal differences in lexicological units in some of Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin (1899-1937)’s poems that were translated into Turkish. For this purpose, the collection of Behramoğlu’s translations of A. Pushkin’s poems entitled Seviyordum Sizi, Seçme Şiirler (I used to love you, selected poems) has been selected for elaboration. Non-Probability Sampling Method was used to select 20 poems as samples out of 68 ones in the collection. Lexicological units in the sourse text that may be subject to loss and expansion of meanings due to Temporal Differences while translating them into target language have been identified and later the findings were compared with their Turkish equivalents. The obtained findings were analyzed by means of content analysis method. We foud out that the problems arising from temporal differences in the target language have overcome by applying techniques of "historicizing translation" and "translation by renovating" developed by James Holmes (1924-1986). To achieve the purposes of "historicizing translation" and "translation by renovating" the translator has used 5 distinct translation methods. It is expected that the findings of the given research will contribute to the Russian to Turkish translation studies and translation criticism.
