ROLE OF MIGRANT-NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS IN MAINTENANCE AND TRANSFER OF TRADITIONS: İZMİR BOSNIAN SANCAK CULTURE AND SOLIDARITY ASSOCIATION CASE
Local administration associations are the units which carry out the services that affect our daily life deeply. Nevertheless, some community oriented services are carried out by individuals or voluntary organizations, in other words, by non-governmental organizations, besides local authorities, as well. It is possible to define non-governmental organizations as organizations which are non-profit and separate from official corporations, able to function independently, persuade people within political, social, cultural, legal, and environmental purposes and act accordingly, enroll members based on voluntarism, and gain income via donations or membership fees. The position of non-governmental organizations in our country or in the world is significant regarding the issues such as health, education, human rights, economic growth and peace. The number of non-governmental organizations of immigrants, which cannot be analyzed under the generic title of non-governmental organizations, is increasing in today’s Turkey day by day. Especially in big cities, the role and contribution of such organizations founded by immigrants who share the same ideas, culture, traditions in order to act together is crucial in transfer and maintenance of traditional culture. This paper discusses the role and significance of non-governmental organizations of immigrants in transfer and maintenance of traditional culture, focusing on the case of Izmir Bosnian Sancak Culture and Solidarity Association.
