Abstract
FROM LOCAL PERFORMANCE TRADITION TO VOCAL EDUCATION: A STUDY ON THE HARPUT GHAZAL “AH EYLEDİĞİM SERV-İ HIRÂMÂNIN İÇİNDİR”
In this study, the mouth (dialectal articulation) and laryngeal (hançere) characteristics, which constitute the distinctive elements of the Harput regional vocal performance tradition, are examined through the example of the Harput ghazal “Ah Eylediğim Serv-i Hırâmânın İçindir.” Within the scope of the research, audio recordings performed by Hafız Osman Öge, Enver Demirbağ, and Paşa Demirbağ who are regarded as source performers of the Harput musical tradition were comparatively analyzed. In the analyses, the shared and divergent mouth features observed in these performances were identified through phonetic transcription, while laryngeal characteristics were evaluated based on common melodic phrases and the ornamental vocal techniques employed by the performers. Based on the findings obtained, two vocal and articulation exercises reflecting the mouth and laryngeal characteristics specific to the Harput regional vocal tradition were developed. These exercises were designed with a holistic approach that integrates melodic structure with articulation and vocal delivery. The study is significant in terms of documenting the Harput vocal performance tradition through concrete data, transferring local performance characteristics into the field of vocal education, and contributing to the formation of an inventory for folk music vocal training.
