Abstract
THE HISTORY OF CULTURE AND SCIENCE IN NOVELS THAT NAMED "KAPLUMBAĞA TERBİYECİSİ" AND "MİHRİ MÜŞFİK HANIM'IN İZİNDE"
"The Tortoise Trainer” is a biographical novel about Osman Hamdi Bey, archaeologist, painter and the founder of the Turkish museum. "The Tortoise Trainer”, as it is known, is a painting of Osman Hamdi Bey. Emre Caner gives the same name to his novel, and he relates Turkish art in this way. Especially, the novel mentions about what our painters have done for art in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, how the Archaeological Museum was built, Lagina Excavations, and how the Alexander Sarcophagus was brought to İstanbul. Emre Caner, in the acknowledgements section of the novel, cites the resources which he used. Thus, the work proved to be not entirely fictional. Caner also, in the text of the novel, utilises these resources.
The writer has a novel about first Turkish woman painter Mrs Müşfik. Mrs Müşfik was born in 1886 as a daughter of a pasha and she died in 1954.She was buried in potter's field of New York. She drew the portraits of Mustafa Kemal, the Pope, Edison and former USA President Roosevelt. She led a bohemian lifestyle. In this book the culture that Mrs. Müşfik inherited us is given by the writer. In this article we are going to try to examine the history of culture and science in these two novels written by Emre Caner.
