Abstract
EVALUATION OF THE ANATOLIAN POP-ROCK MUSIC IN TERMS OF INTERTEXTUALITY
In the 1960’s, Anatolian pop-rock music genre emerged from the combination of Anatolia's rich cultural heritage with the music technique of the West. In terms of intertextuality, the Anatolian pop-rock genre has combined folk songs with the music tastes of the period and has provided integration with different cultures. Western popular music elements (rhythm, harmony, instrument selection) of the period were placed in folk songs to create a synthesized kind of music.
Kubilay Aktulum describes musical intertextuality as “exchange between at least two musical works, lyrics”. Intertextuality in the genre of Anatolian pop-rock music means blending folk songs, folk poems, and subjects, words, idioms that take part in folk literature with Western popular music elements. Since we see music and lyrics as a text, in our study, we use the concept of intertextuality as it is a general definition when we talk about the exchange of different music types and lyrics. It is seen that both the harmony, rhythm and instruments of Western popular music are quoted and placed in folk songs, and it is seen as making original compositions by quoting folk poets or anonymous poems. Sometimes, it is alluded by quoting the subject, word, idiom, style of saying which take part in folk literature along with melodic and rhythmic motifs of folk music. Also, it is emulated by Western instruments to have the timbre similarity of Turkish folk instruments.
