Abstract
FREQUENCY OF NOUNS FOUND IN TURKISH GRADED READERS FOR FOREIGNERS
All languages have prominent words for use. The use of these words is determined by many factors such as age group and language level of the language users, and varies across users. The frequency of word use in a language is revealed by word frequency studies. Frequency studies have an important role in foreign language teaching. Frequency studies are used to determine the words to be taught primarily. Frequency studies in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language are usually based on textbooks. However, there is a need to determine the frequently used words in graded readers. Frequency studies on graded readers can be done separately according to the word types. Thus, multiple word lists on separate levels can be produced. In this study, it is aimed to examine the nouns used in the A1-A2, B1-B2, B2-C1 level graded readers prepared for foreigners by Yunus Emre Institute. Document analysis, a qualitative research design, was employed in the study. The data obtained by examining 9 Turkish graded readers for foreigners was analyzed with content analysis and the frequency of use of the nouns and their distribution across levels were identified. It is expected that this study will support previous study data on word frequency and will be an example for future studies.
